Let’s be honest, shopping for fit is not fun. Well, for the exception of 2% of the population that can wear anything off the rack and those who intuitively knows what works for their body type. But fit is not a science. The first step is to recognize the fact that numbers are relative in the fashion industry. It invented vanity sizing after all! Rather, learning what works for your body type ensures a more pleasant shopping experience.

On Tuesday, April 28, TERRA will host a one-hour seminar aptly called Capital Style: Back to the Basics. The lecture aims to empower women by giving them the tools to create their own style – effortless style, that is. TERRA owner, Oriana Khatso, will impart a few ground rules on how to dress for your body type and how to shop for pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a versatile wardrobe. Guests will leave with a roadmap to shopping for fit and style.

The event will be held at the stylish Darlington House in Dupont Circle from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., presentation at 7 p.m. Complimentary food and drink will be served. Please RSVP at hello@shopterradc.com by Monday, April 27, 2009.

The LBD:  The Little Black Dress as created by Coco for her lover’s funeral and worn by Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany’s… this staple piece remains an icon.  Always classy, understated, elegant and finished with pearls, oy!  This piece has withstood the ages because it is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe and can be worn day or night, with heels or flats.  And it never fails to enchant!

Shopping Tip:  Keep it simple – the key to a great LBD is nice fabric and a great fit.  LBD’s are a wardrobe staple, so invest more in this piece and opt for good fabric and a nice cut.  LBD’s are versatile, so play with them; dress em’ up or down by changing shoes, jewelry, layering with a sweater or blazer, or adding a belt.  For some ideas, see the photos above, this is the same dress styled for Day & Night!  To maximize versatility, make sure to buy a dress that hits your knee, has a relatively modest neckline and has a sleeve or thicker shoulder strap.

Our Recommendation:  Pink Tartan’s David Meister is King of the LBD for a woman with a slimmer frame, while David Meister is better for those of us blessed with curves!

The Black Skirt:  We’ll never tire of its chameleon-like versatility!  It can be worn for a working lunch at a ‘cheap eat’s’ haunt like Matchbox, paired with a silk blouse and blazer; or it can be magically transformed into a sleek, elegant look sans blazer and a change of earrings and shoes, for a romantic liaison or drinks with pals at an chic downtown spot like Proof.  We’ve styled our black halo skirt for a day at the office or a night out to dinner…

Shopping Tip:  The little black skirt is another great wardrobe staple.  It’s versatile and timeless.  The key to a great skirt is good fabric and fit.  A good fabric will retain color, should not cling and should have enough weight to help shape you, without revealing any of your less flattering attributes!  Look for high or natural waist skirts that hit at your knee.  Remember, with a high-waisted skirt, you have ‘topside’ options – you can tuck it in or wear it on the outside!

Our Recommendation:  For the straight or hourglass woman, we suggest a pencil skirt, by Vince or Black Halo and for the lady blessed with va-va-va voom, a la Sophia Loren, we would recommend Zelda’s a-line cut skirt, which starts to flare out from the waistline and is made of a weightier fabric.
